Erasmus+ offers exciting new opportunities for schools to connect across Europe through international partnerships, and student and staff mobilities.
For many schools, however, the biggest question isn’t whether they should get involved. It’s where to begin.
At Global School Alliance, we’ve spent years helping schools build international partnerships, deliver collaborative projects and create meaningful global learning experiences. As Erasmus+ returns, we’re ready to help schools make the most of the opportunities available.
What is Erasmus+?
Erasmus+ is the European Union’s flagship programme for education, training, youth and sport. It provides funding for schools to collaborate internationally through activities such as:
- Student exchanges and mobility programmes
- Staff job shadowing and professional development
- Collaborative curriculum projects
- Partnership development with schools across Europe
- School improvement initiatives linked to international learning
With the UK now returning to Erasmus+, there are plenty of opportunities to seek fellow partner schools to align on projects. Utilising this opportunity will help students develop global citizenship competencies, provide international perspectives and experiences to prepare them for their futures.
Understanding the Two Main Funding Routes:
Key Action 1 (KA1)
KA1 focuses on mobility and professional development.
Schools can apply for funding to support:
- Staff training courses
- Job shadowing opportunities
- Teaching assignments abroad
- Student mobility activities
Many schools use KA1 as a way to develop staff expertise, strengthen international partnerships and build capacity before moving on to larger collaborative projects.
Key Action 2 (KA2)
KA2 supports longer-term collaborative partnerships between organisations.
These projects focus on:
- School improvement
- Innovation
- Shared project outcomes
- Developing resources and evidence of impact
- Deepening international collaboration
KA2 projects often create lasting partnerships and wider benefits across whole school communities.
The Four Main Erasmus Themes
Inclusion and Diversity
Creating more inclusive learning environments, supporting disadvantaged learners and sharing best practice between schools.
Digital Transformation
Helping students and staff develop digital skills and use technology effectively for learning and collaboration.
Environment and Climate Action
Projects focused on sustainability, environmental awareness, behaviour change and student-led action.
Democratic Participation and Active Citizenship
Helping young people understand democratic values, identify misinformation and become active global citizens.
How can I get started?
- Global School Alliance helps schools move from “we’d like to do Erasmus” to “we have a successful international project.” Register your interest to join the community group to start connecting with potential partner schools and choosing a project. Our team will contact you to explore your priorities, and answer any questions.
How can Global School Alliance support my Erasmus application?
- With our support we’ll aim to refine your project concepts, align your proposal with Erasmus+ priorities. We’ll help you demonstrate the impact of your project and provide best practice around developing partnerships. We can also provide all of the support to plan, book and deliver your mobility to your partner school.
When is the application window open?
- Applications open in November 2026, and close in February 2027. Funding outcomes will likely be announced in July/August 2027. In order to apply for this application window, it’s a good idea to think about which partner school you may like to work with, and what kind of project, centred around the key themes you’d like to work together on. Global School Alliance can help with introductions and support for your application planning.
