So, what is Erasmus?
Erasmus+ is the European Union’s flagship programme for education, training, youth and sport.
It provides funding for schools to collaborate internationally through activities such as:
- Student exchanges and mobility programmes
- Staff job shadowing and professional development
- Collaborative curriculum projects
- Partnership development with schools across Europe
- School improvement initiatives linked to international learning
The funding is important.
But the real opportunity is what schools can do with it.
- Better language learning
- More confident students
- New international relationships
- Stronger global citizenship
- Professional development for staff
- And potentially making international experiences accessible to young people whose families could never normally afford them
Understanding the Two Main Funding Routes:
There are different ways schools can participate in Erasmus. Two of the main routes you may come across are Key Action 1 and Key Action 2.
Key Action 1 (KA1)
KA1 is focused on mobility and professional development
This can include activities such as:
- Student mobility
- Staff training
- Job shadowing
- Teaching assignments abroad
- International professional development
For many schools, this is the most immediate route for creating international experiences for students and staff, strengthening international partnerships and building capacity before moving on to larger collaborative projects. It is also the main focus of GSA’s initial Erasmus support.
Key Action 2 (KA2)
KA2 focuses on longer-term collaboration between organisations
Projects may involve:
- School improvement Innovation
- Shared international projects
- Developing resources
- Measuring and sharing impact
- Building deeper partnerships between schools
These projects can create long-term relationships and wider benefits across a whole school community.
