The Ravensbourne School

The Ravensbourne School, a secondary school in South East London, has established a Sister School Partnership in China. As part a Leadership Delegation, Executive Headteacher Mark Ridley and Assistant Headteacher Robert Lewis visited schools across Hangzhou and Nanjing to strengthen their links, discover innovative educational practices and explore areas for collaboration.

Key findings and observations

I was particularly impressed by the strategic integration of AI in both teaching and school operations, enhancing personalised learning and efficiency. The high level of teaching—marked by subject mastery, pedagogical rigour, and student engagement—was evident across classrooms. Equally striking was the emphasis on holistic education, with a rich array of extracurricular activities.

The professionalism of school leaders and their commitment to continuous improvement left a lasting impression, and the cultural exchange has deepened my perspective on global education.

What impact has it had on your professional growth?

This experience has sharpened my global outlook, deepened my cultural awareness, and strengthened my resolve to lead with vision and purpose.

What are your future plans?

We plan to connect online initially and build a relationship where students can talk and meet online, hopefully leading to a visit.

What would you recommend this opportunity to other school leaders?

I would recommend building a partnership to further develop global links with schools to support young people for education in an ever-changing world.

Visiting schools in China as part of the Global School Alliance was an inspiring and enriching experience. I had the privilege of meeting dedicated school leaders, observing innovative educational practices, and engaging in meaningful dialogue about global learning. The hospitality and cultural depth I encountered were truly humbling, and the visit has deepened my commitment to fostering international collaboration and excellence in education.
