I was invited to the Global School Alliance’s 5th anniversary as Subject Leader of MFL at a local Liverpool secondary school. We had welcomed John to school earlier this year and I was keen to learn more about the GSA and how we might look to work alongside them in the future.
We recognise the benefits for our students when they can see themselves as global citizens and look outside of their classroom. We really try to supply them with authentic experiences and seek to empower them with cultural capital. This is often so powerful and appears to be the way into student memory as they remember clearly the additional opportunities to do something a bit different for years after. It is, in our view, an integral part of education.
The event did not fail to inspire me and not just because of the amazing venue!
The afternoon was jam-packed with opportunity to hear about the amazing projects globally that the GSA has supported and hearing from students who had been to Aruba to build a football pitch and primary students invested in working on sustainability with students around the world was just mind-blowing. How fantastic are our young people? And, of course, their teachers!
Those invited to present evoked a range of personal responses including joy, pride and tears of happiness in their openness and recognition of their supporters. I left with a list of people to email and thank for sharing their participation in a variety of events and things to find out more about as the presentations had me brimming with ideas. I will definitely be looking to enhance our student experience with opportunities offered by the Global School Alliance.
Thank you John and Hannah for reaching out and inviting us. Here’s to many more years!
