Building Peace Through Music, Culture and Friendship

In May 2026, students and staff from St Joseph’s College travelled to Japan, as part of a cultural exchange programme with Dalton School Tokyo.

Designed to promote intercultural understanding, peace, and friendship, the exchange gave students the opportunity to immerse themselves in Japanese culture while building meaningful relationships with their Japanese peers. Through music, cultural experiences, school immersion, and collaborative learning, students developed a deeper understanding of both Japan and their place within an interconnected world.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Throughout the exchange, students spent time alongside their counterparts at Dalton School Tokyo, attending lessons, participating in collaborative activities, and experiencing everyday life within a different education system.

The opportunity to engage directly with Japanese students helped bring cultural learning to life in a way that could never be achieved through textbooks alone.

Reflecting on the experience, Vice Principal Georgina Rowlands described the partnership as:

“A genuine insight into another culture and education system while helping our students develop confidence, independence and global awareness.”

Students particularly valued the friendships they formed and the opportunity to experience Japanese school life first-hand. Through conversations, shared activities, and collaborative projects, they discovered common interests while gaining a greater appreciation for cultural differences.

Experiencing Japanese Culture First-Hand

Away from the classroom, students explored some of Tokyo’s most iconic cultural and historical landmarks.

Visits included Senso-ji Temple, the Tokyo National Museum, Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, and the Origami Museum. These experiences provided valuable opportunities to learn about Japanese history, traditions, and values while developing a deeper understanding of the country’s unique identity.

One particularly memorable experience was meeting internationally renowned origami master Kazuo Kobayashi.

Watching him transform a simple sheet of paper into intricate works of art gave students a fascinating insight into the patience, creativity, and precision that underpin traditional Japanese craftsmanship.

Students also took part in a sushi-making workshop, explored local restaurants, and experienced Japanese customs and etiquette first-hand. These everyday experiences became some of the most valuable moments of cultural immersion.

Discovering New Perspectives

Throughout the week, students were encouraged to reflect on the similarities and differences between life in Japan and the United Kingdom.

Many were struck by the cleanliness of the cities, the efficiency of public transport, and the respect people showed towards one another in public spaces.

The experience encouraged students to look beyond stereotypes and gain a deeper appreciation for the values that shape Japanese society.

Georgina reflected that students particularly valued:

“The chance to experience Japanese traditions first-hand and the opportunity to explore themes of peace, cultural understanding and international co-operation.”

By immersing themselves in another culture, students developed greater curiosity, empathy, and global awareness.

Music as a Universal Language

One of the unique aspects of the exchange was its focus on music as a tool for building understanding across cultures.

Working alongside students from Dalton School Tokyo, participants took part in collaborative composition, rehearsal, and performance activities using modern music technology. Through these shared creative experiences, students discovered how music can connect people regardless of language or background.

The project reinforced one of the central aims of the exchange: demonstrating how creativity, collaboration, and shared experiences can help foster friendship and international understanding.

As students reflected afterwards, music became a powerful reminder that people often have far more in common than they initially realise.

Building Confidence and Independence

Like any international experience, the exchange challenged students to step outside their comfort zones.

Whether navigating a new city, communicating across language barriers, or adapting to unfamiliar customs, students developed confidence and resilience throughout the week.

According to Georgina, the experience had a lasting impact:

“The trip had a lasting impact on participants and has inspired many students to continue developing their global outlook and interest in Japan.”

By embracing new experiences and learning from those around them, students became more independent and open-minded learners.

Friendships That Last Beyond the Visit

While the cultural activities and educational experiences were memorable, it was the relationships formed that left the greatest impression.

Students spent time learning, creating, and exploring alongside their Japanese peers, building friendships that quickly became one of the highlights of the programme.

Reflecting on the visit, Georgina noted:

“Above all, the friendships formed and the opportunity to experience Japanese culture first-hand were the highlights most frequently mentioned by students.”

These connections helped students recognise the value of international friendship and demonstrated how meaningful relationships can be built through openness, curiosity, and mutual respect.

Looking to the Future

For St Joseph’s College, the Japan Cultural Exchange was not simply an opportunity to visit another country.

It was an opportunity for students to challenge assumptions, develop confidence, build international friendships, and gain a deeper understanding of a culture very different from their own.

Reflecting on the overall experience, Georgina summarised its impact:

“The Japan exchange provided an unforgettable opportunity for our students to experience another culture first-hand, develop lasting international friendships and grow in confidence and independence.”

Through music, cultural exchange, and meaningful human connection, students returned home with memories, friendships, and perspectives that will remain with them long after the trip itself has ended.

As St Joseph’s College continues to explore future international opportunities, including partnerships in India, Peru, and across Europe, the success of the Japan exchange has reinforced the value of global learning experiences in preparing young people for an increasingly connected world.
